Original Content Between Us Friends.

Rarely do I break character of the blog. However, a friend was kind enough to let me know a few things. We listened to Weird Al Yankovick together so his opinion does carry weight. I have been in web development and web design since 2000. Yes, (for those of you doing the math) I started when I was really young and have been doing it for nearly a decade. I was around when pop-ups were considered a good thing. My friend asked, “Why don’t you write more original content?”.

Number 1: Writing original content takes time. On average I work 70 to 80 hours a week. Usually I find myself writing blog posts at night when I cannot sleep (Like right now when there is nothing on TV or I can’t get an idea out my head). Original content creation requires a full thesis and supporting content. I am not a spam blogger that will post for sake of posting. Here is an open call:
Anyone who feels they have something of value to contribute should forward their original articles to content@destinationsavings.com.

Number 2: Attention spans are short. Writing longer articles does not always increase readership or subscriptions. I try to make posts short enough to read in a few minutes. Very few original thoughts can be disseminated if you shorten them to fit current attention spans. However a longer post every now and then might not be a bad idea.

Number 3: Blog character is hard to change. This type of article is out of character, I’m actually blogging about blogging. I never want any of the content to fail at educating and being a resource for those who read it. Whether it is from me or not.

Number 4: Audience feedback & keeping a positive attitude. With so many people focused on the recession it became difficult over the last few months to consistently write optimistic detailed oriented content. It takes considerable conviction to post positive content when feedback/follow-up does not validate the point of view. I always reach out to people for their opinion. Often the proportion of negative out weighs the positive. I take the feedback no matter what.

I could go on, but the point is there’s a time and place for original content while balancing the requirements of the market. This fine line if crossed is called “Jumping the Shark”. I hear your feedback and accept the challenge as long as the readership demands it. But that requires everyone to share this site and the other sites I run with others (See the Blogroll/Links and the content pages across the top). As the readership grows and I get more feedback the more original content will flow from not just me, but the community as a whole.
