SEO Binge Part 1 – Printcasting

This is part of a series on “SEO Binge”

What starts out as a few tweaks can often become an overhaul. How many times as a webmaster have you said I will just make a few changes? This post while not the full set of changes will cover the distribution of content. I thought my RSS feed would be all I needed for content distribution. I realized the adoption of this technology is around the low teens. I know I was getting visits to my sites but even with flashing lights I was not getting subscribers. Then my next thought was move to a newsletter format. I found this redundant and started looking for other options.

My number one problem was how do I leverage the online content network to be offline and maximize the cumulative effect. Enter Printcasting:

News Challenge Winner Dan Pacheco, Printcasting from Knight Foundation on Vimeo.

With all the direct mail, blogs, email updates, etc. printcasting would solve most of my angst of duplicate effort. As with any online service that is free there is always a here today gone tomorrow hesitancy. The tipping point was when I saw the grant accomplishment and long beta phase of the product. The crux is I can reduce my graphic design/publishing time, and go to press in less than an hour. Why was free important me? Lets talk about the free-line. In SEO I have found most free tools get you 90% of the way there. With printcasting free matters because I was already doing these things and the sunk cost and any additional cost to printcasting would have made “switching my behavior” harder.

It took about four hours to check out the technology and then I let it breath for a day. We use printcasting for the following.

In office collateral reading piece
Direct Mail Newsletter
Alternative to RSS Feed on Blogs
On-site Collateral for Events
Advertising/Sponsorship Opportunities

The advertising aspect was icing on the cake. Lets just say it is turnkey. A few click and an ad can be placed to help cover distribution cost. Bottom line I had a magazine like the Great Benjamin Franklin Printing Press in only a few hours.

Content distribution should be consolidated when running brick and mortar and online business . Printcasting allows me improve wordpress by:

I could drop about three widgets
My page load about 3 seconds faster
Analytics/Data Crunching time saved with merged distribution
My new magazine can take on life all its own online (Something my RSS feed can’t do)
Access to dozen of new publishers and potential relationships

In the near future I home to do more of an exploration of printcasting to showcase how a business can use this amazing new technology before competitors get the upper hand. I can’t give away all the secrets today. However, I will say this…The people behind Printcasting.com have big plans.
